If you ask many authors and publishers, the spirit and substance of book digitization is not far removed from the music-swapping, copyright-baiting shenanigans of the early Napster era. If you ask technology vendors like Google and Microsoft, book swapping is a utopian endeavor destined to make human knowledge easily accessible over the Internet. This goes to show that book digitization is a controversial and divisive topic -- not merely in the tech world, but also in academia and entertainment.
